The Puerto Rican War: A Graphic History

$24.95

"A brilliant blend of graphic and literary narration and a lovely work of art in itself.” —Kirkus, STARRED Review

Rendered in gorgeously carved wood blocks and buffeted with historical supplemental material, John Vasquez Mejias’s The Puerto Rican War tells the story of the the 1950 insurrection on the island that resulted in 38 deaths and a failed assassination attempt against President Harry S. Truman. Told as a fable, in which the leaders of the movement are visited by the ghosts of Michael Collins and Gandhi, this book showcases an important and often overlooked moment in American history and a historical touchstone for the Puerto Rican independence movement.

A good sampler of true Puerto Rican history.

The story of the 1950 nationalist revolt is close to my heart because my mother was from the town of Jayuya and lived through these events. Even one of my cousins (then a little boy) was wounded by a stray bullet in the crossfire. My mother's family knew Blanca Canales, thought I am not sure they agreed politically as my mother's family was staunchly pro Luis Muñoz-Marin. In any event, this is a story that was not taught in our schools, but I knew from the testimony of my elders.
Now I want my kids to know the story, that they are connected to it and I am hoping this book is a good start for it.
